Instrumentalized Himalaya: Nepal From Three Perspectives
"I have now been definitely assigned to Pokhara, which I'm extremely happy about, though I don't see how any place can be more beautiful than Kathmandu."
- Douglas Bingham, 9 October 1962 (UMN Archives)
You have chosen to explore the instrumentalization of the Himalaya. In this exhibit we will use the microcosm of Nepal to show how different Himalayan interventionists have used Nepal in different ways: as an object of their humanitarian and salvation impulses, as well as a political tool. Because the evidence of this exhibit is buried in the nuances of tone and hidden in what is left unsaid, it will be important for you to examine the documents within carefully, each is presented to you in their entireties.
